VashtiDance Theater, founded by its Artistic Director, Fatima Logan, exists to uplift the community through music and dance. For more than a half a decade the company has performed dance and music works that inspire and enlighten its audiences at venues including the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, the Glenn Allen Cultural Arts Center, the Dogtown Dance Theater, the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, and the Riverside Theater. As an expression of the company’s commitment to the community and education, VashtiDance Theater has also presented lecture-demonstrations and conducted community workshops for Young Audiences New York, Borough of Manhattan Community College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Powhatan Arts Council, and the Powhatan Chapter of the NAACP. The work that VashtiDance Theater presents combine the aesthetic and technical values of Contemporary and Classical Western dance and music with the Traditional and evolving aesthetics of the dances of Africa and its Diaspora, to create a contemporary perspective that is genuine and authentic.
VashtiDance Theater performs an excerpt of The Pearl, a fusion work based on the literary The Fable of the Pearl, which summarizes the Gnostic call to awaken from the dream like state of this world and attain self-discovery. The Pearl expresses the Gnostic call to awaken from the dream like state and to discover the true Self. The pearl is a work about empowerment, perseverance and victory and its message is expressed through live music and dance that are intricately woven together, inspired by the African Diaspora and blended with classical and contemporary dance, to deliver power, grace, fluidity, and exceptional artistry.
