Stefanie Batten-Bland is a choreographic artist and Artistic Director of Company SBB. Unguarded by abstraction and undeterred by convention, the emotional content of her work is directly accessible; its powerful emotional, social and philosophical message is visceral. Her work, dance installations, combine movement, original visual art and music, are site-specific and designed to enhance the place and people within. In 2012, New York Resident Magazine wrote about her, “When it comes to tackling demanding subject matter, there are few choreographers as intellectually ambitious as Stefanie Batten Bland.” New York based since 2011, Company SBB was originally founded in Paris in 2008 while Stefanie was Head Choreographer at the Paris Opera Comique. She created her interdisciplinary group so that she could better investigate the human condition. Company SBB and Stefanie create performances rooted in community, highlighting the delicate threads that connect us to one another and to our planet. Past awards and honors include the 2016 Jerome Robbins Award, 2016/17 Bessie Schonberg Choreography Fellowship at The Yard, 2015 Kevin Spacey Foundation Artists Choice Award, Camargo/Jerome Foundation Choreographer for Zenon Dance Company (in France), 2014/15 Alvin Ailey Foundation New Directions Choreography Lab Fellow, 2014 Joffrey Ballet Choreographer of Color, and 2010-12 Baryshnikov Arts Center/Jerome Robbins NEW Fellow.
