Debra Cartwright is a Harlem based artist with Art Studio, Art History and graphic design degrees from the University of Virginia and Parsons School of Design respectably. She’s had opportunities to work in the publishing and advertising departments of Essence Magazine, Condé Nast, and People magazine. Her watercolors are influenced by the fashion and beauty images that dominate the media landscape. Cartwright encourages audiences to consider her hyper-feminine representations of black women as spaces for psychological and socio-political exploration. Through art, Debra’s objective is to let all Black women know that they’re naturally beautiful.
