OUR PROGRAMS

Since presenting the first annual Festival in June 2012, Harlem Arts Festival has worked to expand its programming to take place all year round. The four main pillars of what we present are the Festival, HAF Sessions, Exhibitions, and Educational Workshops.

THE FESTIVAL

Our flagship event, the annual free Harlem Arts Festival takes place in Marcus Garvey Park the last weekend in June. It features Harlem-based and affiliated artists who range the gamut of music, dance, theater, and visual artists. Artists are presented at the festival after an online application process, and once accepted, are programmed at our HAF Sessions, Exhibitions, and Workshops throughout the year.

In addition to the artists presented on the Main Stage, Second Stage, and Gallery Walk, the festival offers free programming for youth and families in the Kids’ Corner. We work with many Community Partners to offer varied, enriching, and engaging activities for artists of all ages!

Local businesses and artisans are featured in our Vendor areas throughout the festival setup. Offerings range from local eats to beautiful crafts and wearables. Vendors who wish to participate in the festival can apply online to be included.

HAF SESSIONS

HAF Sessions are our expanded programming series, bringing you the best of the fest all year round! Featuring some of our favorite artists, HAF partners with emerging Harlem organizations to present contemporary local artists as part of our ongoing commitment to their artistic development. These sessions include:

Open Mic Sessions are a chance for past and present HAF Artists and non-HAF Artists to present new work, works in progress, and more. Filled with artists, these Sessions bring artists together to jam and create never before seen, on-the-spot collaborations.

Preview Sessions are kick offs to the fest where HAF showcases selected HAF Artists who made the festival lineup. Attendees are the first first to see the artists before the festival in June!

Reprise Sessions revisits the magic of the summer festival. Just in case you missed it, or want to come back for more, it’s HAF’s way to showcase its Artists one more time before the next great year begins!

Secret Sessions are for the more adventurous event-goers among us. These Sessions are exclusive concerts, dance parties, and truly unique events in architecturally distinct, raw, repurposed spaces that aren’t open to the public. HAF announces the date and time to the world, but keeps the lineup and location secret until the guest list is finalized.

Studio Sessions pair HAF artists with professional artists and provide them performance and recording time at Stadiumred, a local, state-of-the-art recording studio based in Ornette Coleman’s former studio in Harlem. HAF patrons get to experience first hand the recording process in action, and will be given a live studio mix of the performance to take home as a memento!

VIP Sessions are exclusively for our supporters who are are excited about the arts and want to support our mission! VIPs enjoy tickets to all of our events including an open-bar party, live performances by select HAF Artists, a silent auction, special access to goodies from our sponsors, and awesome giveaways.

EXHIBITIONS

Through partnerships with local galleries and art spaces, HAF is able to give its visual artists the opportunity to show their work. Our Exhibitions are group shows that are organized around certain themes that are relevant to our artists and the community at large.

WORKSHOPS

Aimed at connecting multiple generations of creative minds, our workshops put HAF artists in conversation with youth and community members. They are designed to uncover some of the creative process and skill that go into making a new work of art, while encouraging the development of each participant’s creative voice.
