I am the music director of the music group, “Tyrone Birkett/Emancipation”. We have developed a concept called Postmodern Spirituals, which we have presented, at the Dwyer Cultural Center, Berkeley College among other venues.
A description of the concept would be – “The postmodern spiritual re-imagines and revives the Negro spiritual by incorporating jazz, gospel, and soul music. These new compositions speak to the oppression of the mind, soul, and spirit occurring in today’s world. Likened to its predecessor, the postmodern spiritual is freedom music for the 21st century”.

This (music) has a spiritual message filled with sweeping jazz stylings, intense saxophone improvisations and a rhythmic discourse highlighted by the colorful timbre of Ms. Birkett. The message in this music swings with a strong spiritual flow.

I could only speculate that the intent of Birkett and Ralph-Birkett was to uplift and relax the listener’s soul through their music. If that is in fact truth, they hit the bull’s-eye!
