Shine and the Moonbeams
Shawana Kemp is a Harlem resident who has appeared in shows like Sarafina! and Once on this Island. She was even a five time winner of ShowTime at the Apollo. Shawana has taken her love of music and her love of children and is now the creator of Shine and the Moonbeams, familiy music’s first soul band. This project puts kids at the center of their musical experience by taking the familiar sounds of pop and R&B and mixing themes that every urban kid can relate to.
Why do you want to participate in the Harlem Arts Festival?
I believe that this is a great project for so many reasons and we are very unique in that we are an all inclusive band. The music is soulful and the lyrics are clever and I am from Harlem and am always playing in other parts of New York. There is an untapped market here in Harlem that should be exposed to this kind of music. My son is from Harlem and his friends should hear this music and walk down the street to see it.
